In a historic first for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Chinese fighters Zhang Weili and Yan Xiaonan squared off in a title showdown at UFC 300. Held at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, on Saturday, the bout marked a milestone as Zhang emerged victorious over Yan by unanimous decision, retaining her strawweight belt after five grueling rounds.
The clash between Zhang and Yan showcased a riveting display of skill and determination. Despite Yan’s aggressive stand-up approach, frequently knocking Zhang down, the defending champion countered with formidable ground offense. However, Zhang’s dominance was challenged by her opponent’s resilience, particularly evident as Yan repeatedly escaped precarious situations, capitalizing on Zhang’s visible fatigue from the second round onward.
Zhang’s triumph secured her fifth title defense victory, placing her second among women’s strawweight fighters, just behind Poland’s renowned Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Following the match, Zhang lauded Yan’s warrior spirit, expressing respect and a hope for friendship beyond the Octagon.
Reflecting on the fight, Zhang admitted to initially believing she had secured victory with a rear naked choke in the first round. However, Yan’s swift recovery in the subsequent rounds proved the enduring challenge she posed.

Aside from the headline bout, UFC 300 featured four other main card showdowns. Brazilian light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira asserted his dominance over Jamahal Hill with a first-round knockout victory. In a highly anticipated clash, Max Holloway of the U.S. seized the BMF belt from compatriot Justin Gaethje, delivering a knockout punch just seconds before the fight’s conclusion, earning a substantial $600,000 in bonuses.
Armenia’s Arman Tsarukyan clinched victory over former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira of Brazil in a split decision, while newcomer Bo Nickal extended his undefeated streak with a second-round submission win against Cody Brundage.
