Zabit Magomedsharipov: The Biggest ‘What If’ in UFC History

Zabit Magomedsharipov’s story is one of the most compelling in the annals of mixed martial arts. Widely regarded as a surefire future UFC champion due to his dominant and well-rounded skill set, Zabit’s career was tragically cut short in 2019 due to health complications. Instead of continuing his ascent in the octagon, the 18-1 Russian fighter chose to retire and pursue a career in medicine, leaving fans to wonder what could have been.

A Rising Star

Magomedsharipov’s potential was evident from the beginning. His performances in the UFC were nothing short of spectacular, blending an unorthodox striking game with an impressive wrestling base. His unanimous decision victory over Kyle Bochniak at UFC 223 in 2018 remains a highlight, showcasing his ability to dominate opponents in every facet of the fight game.

The Sudden Exit

In 2019, at the peak of his career and just one fight away from a potential title shot, Zabit made the shocking decision to retire. Health complications were cited as the primary reason, and the MMA community was left heartbroken. Fans and analysts alike were convinced that he was destined to hold a UFC belt, but his priorities had shifted. Zabit wanted to focus on his health and pursue a new path as a doctor.

UFC’s Efforts to Bring Him Back

Despite his retirement, the UFC has not forgotten about Zabit. In a recent interview with Red Corner MMA, Zabit revealed that the promotion has reached out to him three or four times since his departure. They even offered him an immediate title shot, a testament to his skills and the void he left in the featherweight division.

“Yes, they do (reach out) from time to time since I left the sport, three or four times they got in touch, they wanted to have a meeting with me, they invited me to the U.S. but I couldn’t go,” Zabit explained. However, he remains steadfast in his decision to stay retired, citing a lack of desire to return to the grueling training camps and the competitive scene.

Not About the Money

For Zabit, the decision to stay retired isn’t about the money. Despite lucrative offers and promises from the UFC, he remains content with his life outside the octagon. “No, it’s not (about the money), they promised me a lot of things but that’s not the point, I simply made up my mind, I don’t want to prove anything to anybody,” he stated. This sentiment echoes the integrity and focus that defined his fighting career.

The Silver Lining: Khasan Magomedsharipov

While Zabit’s fans may never see him compete again, there is a silver lining. His younger brother, Khasan Magomedsharipov, is carving his own path in the sport. Undefeated at 10-0 and competing under the Bellator banner, Khasan is quickly rising through the ranks. He is on the cusp of a title shot against Patricio Pitbull, and Zabit is there every step of the way, cornering his brother and sharing his invaluable experience.

Legacy and What Could Have Been

Zabit Magomedsharipov’s legacy is one of unrealized potential and what-ifs. His brief yet impactful career left an indelible mark on the sport, and his decision to retire at the height of his powers only adds to the mystique. MMA fans can take solace in watching his brother Khasan, hoping to see glimpses of the brilliance that made Zabit a fan favorite.

As Zabit himself put it, “Sometimes I do (think about returning to MMA) but I don’t have the desire yet, I have the desire to train and help my brothers, that’s it.” For now, the MMA world must respect his decision and cherish the memories he created inside the octagon.
