Georges St-Pierre Crowns Makhachev as UFC’s Pound-for-Pound King, Challenging Dana White’s Claim

The ongoing debate over who holds the title of the UFC’s best pound-for-pound fighter has taken an intriguing twist. UFC legend Georges St-Pierre (GSP) has thrown his hat into the ring, challenging the views of UFC President Dana White. White’s recent assertion that Jon Jones is the top fighter has sparked controversy, especially following Islam Makhachev’s dominant performance at UFC 302, where he defended his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier.

A Tale of Two Opinions

Dana White, known for his unwavering support of Jon Jones, was quick to dismiss Makhachev as the pound-for-pound best despite the Dagestani fighter’s impressive track record. “I think he’s one of the greatest of all time,” White said of Makhachev. “I think he’s incredible. I don’t think he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. For anyone to call Islam the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world when Jon Jones is still fighting is nuts and shouldn’t be ranking in the pound-for-pound or doing any of the rankings ever if that’s what you really think.”

However, St-Pierre sees it differently. The former two-division champion and widely regarded MMA icon believes Makhachev’s recent performances solidify his status as the best in the sport right now. “I think right now he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter,” St-Pierre stated. “Because of his last few performances. Just amazing. An amazing showcase of heart, too, because he had a bad cut on his forehead and Poirier gave him a tough time. Pushed the pace to the edge, and I think that fight is going to make Makhachev even better. These are the fights that make you grow.”

Makhachev’s Meteoric Rise

Islam Makhachev has rapidly ascended to the top of the lightweight division, boasting a stellar 26-1 MMA record. His victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 was not just another title defense but a testament to his dominance and skill in the Octagon. Poirier, a seasoned veteran and former interim lightweight champion, pushed Makhachev to his limits, opening a significant cut on his forehead. Despite the bloodshed, Makhachev showcased his resilience and tactical prowess, eventually securing a submission victory in a grueling 22-minute battle.

This win added another significant name to Makhachev’s growing list of conquered foes, including notable victories over Charles Oliveira and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Makhachev’s back-to-back triumphs over top-tier opponents have cemented his reputation as one of the most formidable fighters in the sport.

Jones: The Controversial Heavyweight King

On the other side of the debate stands Jon Jones, who has been a dominant force in the UFC for over a decade. Jones’ last appearance in the Octagon was in March 2023, where he made a stunning return to claim the vacant UFC heavyweight title by defeating Ciryl Gane. Despite his undisputed talent and a career filled with accolades, Jones has been out of action for over a year, raising questions about his current form and relevance in the pound-for-pound rankings.

While Jones’ legacy as one of the greatest fighters is undeniable, his prolonged absence from competition has led some, like St-Pierre, to argue that active fighters demonstrating consistent dominance, like Makhachev, should be given the pound-for-pound crown.

A Matter of Timing and Consistency

St-Pierre’s support for Makhachev as the best pound-for-pound fighter stems from the latter’s active and successful defense of his title. Unlike Jones, who has only recently returned to the spotlight after a long hiatus, Makhachev has consistently proven his mettle against the best in his division. GSP’s argument highlights the importance of current performance and activity in determining the top fighter, a perspective that many fans and analysts share.

The Future of UFC’s Pound-for-Pound Debate

As the UFC community continues to debate the rightful pound-for-pound king, the narratives of Jones and Makhachev will undoubtedly shape the future of the sport. Makhachev’s relentless pursuit of excellence and Jones’ quest to solidify his heavyweight legacy make for a compelling storyline that captivates MMA enthusiasts worldwide.

With Jones set to defend his heavyweight title and Makhachev looking forward to more challenging bouts, the battle for the pound-for-pound crown is far from settled. As Georges St-Pierre puts it, “These are the fights that make you grow,” and the UFC’s top fighters will continue to push the boundaries of the sport in pursuit of greatness.
