Who’s More Likely to Keep Their Title: Aspinall or Edwards?

First and foremost, defending an interim title is a controversial concept. The primary purpose of an interim title is to set up a unification bout with the reigning champion, yet Jon Jones seems uninterested in facing Tom Aspinall at the moment. As UFC 304 heads to Manchester, featuring Aspinall was a must. However, this decision raises questions about the implications if Aspinall were to lose.

Curtis Blaydes is the logical opponent for Aspinall, given their previous encounter and the narrative surrounding their rematch. Aspinall, operating at peak performance, is favored to finish Blaydes. Blaydes has a history of being knocked out by power punchers like Sergei Pavlovich, Derrick Lewis, and Francis Ngannou. Aspinall’s strengths lie in his boxing and knockout power, contrasting Blaydes’ wrestling-centric approach. If Blaydes fails to bring the fight to the ground, it could be a swift night for the challenger.

This fight keeps Aspinall active, thrilling what promises to be a boisterous Manchester crowd. Meanwhile, the UFC can await the resolution of the Jones situation before determining whether Aspinall will be promoted to full champion or face a unification bout.

Turning to the welterweight title fight, Leon Edwards versus Belal Muhammad is a highly anticipated rematch. Their previous encounter in March 2021 ended in a no contest due to an accidental eye poke by Edwards. Both fighters enter UFC 304 with significant unbeaten streaks: Edwards hasn’t lost in 13 fights, while Muhammad boasts 10 fights without a loss.

Edwards, currently ranked No. 2 in ESPN’s pound-for-pound rankings, is known for his well-rounded skills and tactical approach. His recent victory over Colby Covington solidified his status as a top contender. Muhammad, ranked No. 3, is a relentless grinder with a formidable ground game, last defeating Gilbert Burns.

The co-main event features Tom Aspinall defending his interim heavyweight title against Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall, having recovered from his knee injury, is on a mission to prove his dominance in the heavyweight division. Blaydes, a top-ranked heavyweight, aims to avenge his previous loss to Aspinall and secure the interim title.

Despite the interim title debate, Aspinall’s inclusion in UFC 304 is crucial for the Manchester event. His local roots and current form make him a fan favorite. The UFC’s strategy to keep its fighters active and engaged, even amidst championship uncertainties, demonstrates its commitment to delivering high-stakes matchups for the fans.

Analyzing these matchups, it’s evident that Aspinall has a clearer path to retaining his title compared to Edwards. Aspinall’s striking and power present a significant challenge for Blaydes, whose susceptibility to knockouts could be his downfall. Edwards, on the other hand, faces a tough test against Muhammad, whose relentless style could pose problems.

In conclusion, UFC 304 promises thrilling title defenses with Aspinall and Edwards facing formidable challengers. Aspinall’s explosive style and local support give him an edge, while Edwards’ tactical prowess will be tested by Muhammad’s grit. Fans can expect an electrifying event as these top contenders vie for glory in Manchester.
