UFC 307: Alex Pereira’s Title Defense Against Khalil Rountree Sparks Controversy

The UFC is no stranger to stirring the pot when it comes to matchmaking, but the upcoming UFC 307 headliner between Alex Pereira and Khalil Rountree Jr. has raised more than a few eyebrows. Set to take place this October, the bout will see Pereira, the reigning light heavyweight champion, defend his title against Rountree, a fighter whose recent suspension for a banned substance and his ranking outside the top five have made this title shot a contentious one.

The Undeniable Case for Magomed Ankalaev

At the heart of the controversy is Magomed Ankalaev, the No. 2-ranked light heavyweight, who many believe was the rightful next challenger for Pereira’s belt. Ankalaev, a Dagestani fighter known for his exceptional grappling and a 12-fight undefeated streak, seemed poised to step into the octagon for a title shot. However, the UFC had other plans, bypassing Ankalaev in favor of Rountree, who is currently ranked eighth in the division.

The decision has left fans and fighters alike puzzled, especially considering Ankalaev’s impressive track record and his status as the only top-five fighter who hasn’t faced Pereira or is not coming off a loss. His grappling-heavy style is seen as a significant threat to Pereira, whose ground game is widely considered his Achilles’ heel. Many believe that the UFC is intentionally steering clear of this high-risk matchup to protect one of its biggest stars.

Daniel Cormier Weighs In

Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier recently shared his thoughts on the UFC’s decision-making process, offering insight into why the promotion may have chosen Rountree over Ankalaev. According to Cormier, the UFC is treading carefully with Pereira, who has quickly become a major draw for the organization.

“Ankalaev seems like the obvious choice, but not really the choice,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Because I wouldn’t put him in there with Alex right now, like honestly. Alex Pereira is actually selling pay-per-views and he’s making money. He’s very popular for you [UFC] as a company. I don’t know if Ankalaev can do that right now.”

Cormier’s comments reflect a sentiment shared by many in the MMA community: the UFC is protecting Pereira, not only to preserve his championship reign but also because of his growing star power. Pereira has stepped up to save multiple marquee events for the UFC since last November, proving himself as a reliable and bankable fighter. His exciting fighting style and devastating knockout power have made him a fan favorite, and the UFC seems intent on capitalizing on that.

The ‘Goldilocks Zone’ of UFC Stardom

However, Cormier also pointed out an intriguing paradox in Pereira’s situation. While the UFC is keen to keep him on top, they also recognize that Pereira hasn’t yet reached the level of superstardom that could elevate his opponents simply by fighting them. Cormier drew a comparison to Conor McGregor, a fighter whose popularity is so immense that defeating him can instantly propel an opponent into the limelight.

“If you beat Conor McGregor, you become a pay-per-view attraction,” Cormier explained. “If you beat certain guys, you kind of take their shine and you become that attraction. I don’t know if you beat Pereira you become that attraction. I don’t know just by beating him if he’s a big enough star yet to elevate the next guy.”

This “Goldilocks zone” of UFC stardom places Pereira in a unique position: he’s too valuable to risk losing the belt, yet not big enough to catapult another fighter to fame by losing. This delicate balance is likely a significant factor in why the UFC chose to match him against Rountree, a striker who is expected to keep the fight standing, where Pereira is most comfortable.

Rountree’s Shot at Redemption

For Rountree, this title shot represents a massive opportunity to silence his critics and prove that he belongs at the top of the light heavyweight division. Despite the controversy surrounding his recent suspension for ingesting a banned substance, Rountree has maintained that it was an accidental ingestion and has since served his suspension. His striking prowess makes him a formidable opponent for Pereira, and if he can capitalize on this chance, it could be the defining moment of his career.

Meanwhile, Ankalaev is not content to sit idly by. Determined to earn his title shot, he has accepted a fight against the No. 5-ranked Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, just weeks after UFC 307. A victory over Rakic could finally secure Ankalaev the title shot that many believe he already deserves.

The High Stakes of UFC 307

As UFC 307 approaches, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Pereira, Rountree, and Ankalaev. Pereira must defend his title to solidify his reign and continue his rise in the UFC, while Rountree has a chance to turn his career around with a victory that would shock the MMA world. For Ankalaev, a win over Rakic could be his ticket to the title, but the lingering question remains: Will the UFC give him the opportunity, or will they continue to protect Pereira?

UFC 307 promises to be an event filled with high drama and intense action, with the future of the light heavyweight division hanging in the balance.
