In recent years the guys have made a determined effort to shed their weight. They cut a substantial amount of weight into LWD requiring incredible dedication and rigidity in diets. One particular fighter that is tested with this harsh schedule is Sean Strickland. It is now time to look at one of the stricter rules that exist today – Strickland’s walk-around weight – and the extreme weight-loss regime the fighter undergoes.
Strickland’s Walk-Around Weight
The former middleweight title contender is Sean Strickland is scheduled to fight at UFC 302 on June 1st against Paulo Costa. He managed to make 185-pound limit but its not his natural playing weight, he is normally heavy than that.
Strickland has competed in three weight classes: There are three main divisions of boxing that include the welterweight, the middleweight, and the light heavyweight. Even for a man who competes most often in the middleweight division, many believe his nonspecial bout weight is in the neighborhood of 200 pounds.
Estimating Strickland’s Normal Weight
It has not been publicly known the amount of weight Strickland mentioned as his walk-around weight. But, there are things that are highlighted by past fight records, which are a clear indication of a fighter’s potential strengths and weaknesses.
Even during his fight against Nassourdine Imavov early 2023, where the two met in a light heavyweight bout, Strickland tipped the scales at 204 pounds. He will later say that he was limbering up while still at a trim 217 pounds. 2 pounds. This would imply that Strickland’s weight when not attempting to gain muscle mass fell within the range of 210-220 pounds.
The Weight-Cutting Process
Regarding the training, fights are usually attended when the weight is cut for a bout, that can be 25-35 pounds less. This geniune, significant weight loss is not for the faint of heart. The process includes special diets, rigorous exercise, and water fasting which means the competitors must not consume anything before competing.
The pressure of this schedule was evident when Francis was performing the weigh-ins before his bout with Jared Cannonier December, 2022. Whether that was intentional or not, though, it was darn great TV that served to remind viewers of just how masochistic weight-cutting can be in the world of MMA.

Despite a series of injuries and problems with weight, last year Strickland started to think about moving to the next higher finalist weight. As we were aware before the fight against Cannonier, Strickland had complained about weight cut. “I am aiming for the 205 now f***! I can tell you that it does not get any better,” he said. However, next fight he did compete at light heavyweight but Strickland got back to middleweight division.
The Bigger Picture
Strickland’s experience frees up a bigger conflict of the sport of mixed martial arts – weight trimming. Professionals operate under shooting all year without taking their bodies through rigorous exercises, shootouts and intense physical activities to risk a long-term health problem for a temporary gain. Even today many fighters present fake documents which is a big concern, The UFC and other organizations have attempted to stop this by implementing some measures.
