The electrifying bantamweight champion, Sean “The Suga Show” O’Malley, has sent shockwaves through the MMA world once again as he eyes an early 2024 return to the Octagon. The charismatic fighter, fresh off his stunning knockout victory over Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in August, is ready to take the UFC by storm once more.
In a recent appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” O’Malley revealed his eagerness to defend his 135-pound title. Although he initially called out Marlon Vera for a showdown in December, the UFC had different plans. They presented O’Malley with a tantalizing offer, the chance to headline his show, a prospect he couldn’t resist.
O’Malley’s charisma and fighting prowess have made him a fan favorite, and the UFC recognizes his star power. With UFC 295 scheduled for November 11 in New York and UFC 296 set for December 11 in Las Vegas, O’Malley acknowledges that 2024 might be a more realistic timeframe for his return to the Octagon.
“I did truly want to fight in December,” O’Malley stated, adding, “I called out ‘Chito’ for December, but then I talked to the UFC, and they kind of already had – they were trying to get Colby Covington and Leon Edwards together. I asked them, and they want me to maintain my show, which I think is f*cking dope. I am down with that.”
While Sterling is angling for a rematch and No. 1 contender Merab Dvalishvili awaits his shot, O’Malley’s heart is set on a showdown with Marlon Vera, the only fighter to have handed him a loss in his career, back in August 2020.
“I am hoping the UFC just say, ‘Let’s fcking do it,'” O’Malley emphasized.
UFC 300 is on the horizon, but O’Malley, eager to make his mark, anticipates returning to the Octagon before that monumental event in April.
“I think UFC 300 is in April,” O’Malley said. “That would be a sweet card to be on, but … I am going to guess I will be back before that, before UFC 300.”
Despite his meteoric rise, O’Malley remains grounded and knows that the true test of a champion is defending the belt. He is ready to prove himself once again as a defending champion, eager to cement his legacy in the sport.
“I have still got to go out there and prove it,” O’Malley said. “I think once you become champ, it is like, are you champ? You have got to go defend the belt. You have got to defend the f*cking belt, so I am looking forward to that.”
Sean O’Malley’s journey from being an underdog to becoming a UFC champion is a remarkable tale of resilience and dedication. His charisma, combined with his explosive fighting style, has endeared him to fans worldwide. As he sets his sights on headlining his show and defending his title in 2024, the MMA community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in the “Suga Show.”
