Benoit Saint Denis, UFC Fighter: No Remorse Despite Dustin Poirier’s horrific Staph infection
At UFC 299, Benoit Saint Denis took on the formidable challenge of going up against well-known lightweight fighter Dustin Poirier in the octagon. Saint Denis was suffering from a crippling staph infection, but he was determined to battle for his life, even though it would end his professional career. The bout, which was won by Poirier via knockout in Round 2, was more than just a demonstration of strength; Saint Denis gained a great deal of insight from it as he considered the events that preceded and followed the fight.

The road to UFC 299 for Saint Denis was paved with challenges. He not only had to go through a difficult training camp, but his staph infection struck at the worst possible time. It made everything more difficult, including a more difficult weight reduction, excruciating training sessions, and a general decline in energy, since he caught it so late in his camp. Nevertheless, he persisted, resolved to take a position opposite Poirier and give it his all.

Saint Denis said, “I learnt a lot,” describing the encounter with emotion. “Never undervalue someone, particularly a fighter with Dustin Poirier’s level of skill. The most important lesson I learnt from that battle, though, is that you cannot enter the octagon if you are not fully healthy. Although it’s a difficult pill to swallow, I now understand it better than before.

Saint Denis did not take the significance of the chance lightly. It was an incredible opportunity to fight Poirier, one of the most reputable and experienced lightweights in the sport. It was his opportunity to shine on one of the largest platforms of his career. His body was failing him, but he was determined to walk.

Fighting More Than Just Your Enemy

Despite the staph infection, the decision to carry on with the struggle was emotional and fraught with uncertainty. Saint Denis was aware that his athletic prowess was declining. His body had been weakened by the sickness, his training camp had not been optimal, and the weight loss had been an arduous experience. However, the notion of withdrawing caused him great moral distress.

“I had to choose between giving up on the fight and taking on one of the best fighters, even if I’m not at my best?” Saint Denis thought back. There didn’t seem to be a correct response. It would seem as though I was undermining Poirier and his preparation if I pulled out. I didn’t want to disappoint him after he had trained for this for weeks on end. However, fighting when not fully recovered also posed a serious risk.”

Saint Denis held a great deal of respect for Poirier, and he thought that abandoning the fight at the last minute would betray his values of honour and sportsmanship. His warrior attitude was demonstrated by his willingness to battle Poirier head-to-head, even if it meant doing so while under duress.

During the battle week, Saint Denis discovered a lot about himself despite the physical difficulties. “I discovered that stress was the root of a lot of the problems. My body weakened due to stress because I wasn’t enjoying the training camp as much as I should have. Stress causes you to battle not only your adversary but also yourself. Additionally, I paid for it.

The Burden of Accountability

Saint Denis also discussed the pressures that fighters encounter as their careers develop. “It’s like becoming the CEO of a company when you start building your name,” he said. “A group of individuals rely on you, and you’re handling a tonne of additional duties. It’s intimidating, particularly if you’re not used to it.

The pressure of managing sponsors, supervising a team, and fulfilling media commitments had severely strained Saint Denis’s training. Managing all of these factors made it difficult for him to concentrate on his fighting technique. He hadn’t prepared for the learning curve.

“I came to see that having combat prowess is not the only requirement for success. It’s about taking care of everything that goes along with it, including your own mental health and the people around you. You risk burning out if you don’t remember to appreciate the process.”

No Remorse, Just Wisdom

Saint Denis is not sorry about the fight, no matter how it turns out. Despite being a major obstacle, the staph infection gave him lessons that he would use in his work. He declared, “I don’t believe in coincidences.” “If I contracted the infection, it was due to a physical or mental issue with me. I was under stress since I wasn’t enjoying my training.

Following UFC 299, Saint Denis has undergone notable transformations. His goal is to rediscover the thrill he once felt from training and to recall the reasons he initially fell in love with the sport. As he gets ready to take centre stage at the UFC Paris event in front of his home audience, he said, “I’m in a much better place now.” “I’m working hard in my training, but I’m having fun too. Your performance is what you do when you are passionate about it. I’m prepared to deliver an unforgettable performance for my followers.

Not only was UFC 299 a setback for Saint Denis’ record, but it also marked a turning point in his professional life. It made him realise how vital it is to maintain both physical and mental health, and how important it is to maintain equilibrium in the midst of the turmoil of professional combat.

Saint Denis is more than eager to entertain when he enters the octagon for UFC Paris. He is ready to give a performance that will make his teammates, supporters, and most importantly, himself proud. His health is good and he is focused.
