Dana White has some good fighters on the UFC roster, but that doesn’t mean sunshine and rainbows every day. At a recent event hosted by JRE and former champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Joe Rogan and guest mentioned Jon Jones, who was a big draw in his own right, with his diagonal kicks to the knee and discussed such a move could spell disaster for him UFC CEO Shared opinion.
The Harrowing Rampage Jackson Experience
‘Rampage’ Jackson often vocalised the negative effects on his knees due to kicks Jon Jones floored at UFC 135. He alluded that such actions could ruin an MMA career and former Dana White, the UFC champion said, “So think about it, you’re a promoter And you’ve got this fighter selling a lot of tickets. So you want to give it at least two fights a year, but you’ve got a guy like Jon Jones fingering your fighters and then they injure a finger and they’ll be lucky in 2 years or something like that. It’s not good for business.”
Now Jones isn’t the only fighter to use diagonal kicks. A recent and infamous example would be Khalil Rowntree Jr. eliminated from Modestas Bukauskas back in September 2021. The interior star scored a TKO victory over his opponent after a nasty slant missed his knee although many feared he had a broken leg and Bukauskas later updated that it was It kotodwe in the injury.
Oblique Kicks Used Extensively
Not Rowntree Jr. and Jones are the only ones using this kick. Conor McGregor also used this kick in his first UFC fight against Nate Diaz and immediately regretted throwing it. In an Instagram post, the former champion shared a photo of her kicking and wrote, “I really chose not to follow up with this punch at this exact moment as the feeling felt right see and regret that I followed.”

But he was not in favor of outlawing this “terribly bad kick”. According to ‘The Notorious’ it was just a matter of getting your feet in the right place and not being hit by one of these, as you would legally do with any other blow under the Unified Rules Set and of course, it was Joe Rogan has a similar take on this situation.
Joe Rogan Position on Diagonal Kicks
Joe Rogan soon weighs in on the discussion, admitting that this is a major problem in the game. But he said there are no rules for the kick Jon Jones used on Quinton Jackson, making it illegal for anyone to use it during a fight. But Rogan was shy about sharing his opinion. He really thinks there should be a rule about these knee-high kicks. This can be one of the most important steps in protecting fighters from career-ending injuries.
“It’s definitely not good for business but it’s still legal. It is now legal. So, it’s like, it’s hard to say. I realize you shouldn’t target the knee, but then somebody would say, ‘Okay, but you can hit the knee through the roundhouse but you can’t just sidestep it. You can’t overextend it,’ Joe Rogan said.
Interestingly, Rountree Jr. and used the kick at UFC Vegas 36 . came close to receiving a ban after his victory. After the event, outrage from fans and pros looked into the MMA rules committee. However, the kick is still legal, but a highly controversial move nonetheless.
