Kayla Harrison Faces Weight Cut Challenge Ahead of UFC 300 Debut Against Holly Holm
As Kayla Harrison gears up for her highly anticipated UFC debut at UFC 300 against former bantamweight champion Holly Holm, all eyes are on her ability to make the 136 lbs weight limit for the first time in her career.
Harrison, a multiple-time Olympic gold medalist, has predominantly competed at 155 lbs, where she clinched the PFL lightweight title twice. However, with the absence of the UFC’s women’s 145lb division, her transition to bantamweight presents a significant challenge.
Nutrition expert Tom Coughlin has voiced concerns over Harrison’s weight cut, labeling it as “seriously risky.” In an interview on the MMA On Point YouTube channel, Coughlin highlighted the potential dangers associated with such a drastic cut, emphasizing the need for caution.
“Personally, I’ve never seen a weight cut of this magnitude,” Coughlin remarked. “Losing 30 lbs to try and get down to 135 lbs is a significant amount of weight she’s got to cut.”
Despite the skepticism surrounding her weight cut, Harrison remains determined to make her mark in the UFC. Her last fight, at a catchweight of 150 lbs against Aspen Ladd, ended in a victorious unanimous decision, showcasing her prowess inside the cage.
