Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Biaggio Walsh, the grandson of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, is gearing up for his professional MMA debut on February 24 in Riyadh. Walsh, set to feature in the PFL Champions vs Bellator Champions fight card at the Kingdom Arena, expresses his gratitude and excitement for being part of Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning sports scene.
“Saudi Arabia is definitely coming up in the combat world, whether it’s boxing or MMA. More and more sports are actually going to be involved in Saudi Arabia. I think that they are just going to start to become a [country] of sports. So, just to be a part of this kind of history, I am super grateful,” says Walsh in an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya English.
Drawing inspiration from his iconic grandfather, Muhammad Ali, Walsh acknowledges the weight of his family legacy. He emphasizes Ali’s humanitarian spirit as his primary source of inspiration. “What inspires me most is what he did outside of the ring, and not what he did as a fighter. He was the people’s champ. It is the [humanitarian] in him that I draw the most inspiration from,” Walsh remarks.

Despite recognizing that “there will never be another Muhammad Ali,” Walsh aims to inspire others through his own journey in MMA. He hopes to encourage people to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges they may encounter along the way.
Transitioning from football to MMA, Walsh found fulfillment in the versatility of martial arts. “For me, I loved the idea that there were multiple martial arts I could play a part in a fight. I just kind of gravitated toward that. It kind of fell into my lap,” he explains. After feeling unfulfilled with football and exploring various career paths, Walsh found his purpose in MMA.
Through his journey in MMA, Walsh not only found fulfillment but also a deeper connection with his faith. Exploring Islam has brought him closer to understanding his heritage and spiritual identity. He shares his intention to visit Mecca and perform the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the profound impact of faith on his life.
