Dana White’s Top UFC Fighters Leave Out Khabib and McGregor, Sparking Debate

In a recent episode of the “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson” podcast, UFC President Dana White found himself in the hot seat, asked by none other than Mike Tyson to name the greatest fighters in UFC history. As the conversation unfolded, White’s list of all-time greats sparked a wave of controversy and debate among fans, especially given the notable omissions of two of the sport’s biggest stars: Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

Joined by co-host DJ Whoo Kid, the discussion delved into the annals of UFC history, with Tyson and White reminiscing about the sport’s most iconic figures. White, faced with the daunting task of naming just five top fighters, instead opted to expand his list to seven, illustrating the depth of talent that has graced the Octagon over the years.

White’s Picks: The Giants of the Octagon

Starting with a name that has become synonymous with dominance, White placed Jon Jones at the pinnacle of his list. “Bones” Jones, who ruled the light-heavyweight division with an iron fist, remains a towering figure in MMA, having defeated legends like Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, Daniel Cormier, and Alexander Gustafsson. Jones’ recent move to heavyweight, where he secured the championship by defeating Ciryl Gane, further cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest.

White’s admiration for Jones was clear: “Jon Jones has faced and defeated some of the toughest competitors across two divisions. His skill set and dominance are unparalleled.”

From there, the UFC President turned his attention to the pioneering female fighters who transformed the sport. He highlighted Ronda Rousey, whose rapid rise to fame and brutal armbar submissions captivated a global audience, and Amanda Nunes, hailed as the “greatest female fighter of all time.” Nunes’ victories over a string of formidable opponents, including a stunning first-round knockout of Rousey, earned her a place on White’s list.

“Ronda Rousey put women’s MMA on the map, but Amanda Nunes took it to a whole new level,” White remarked, reflecting on the monumental impact both fighters had on the sport.

Tyson’s Throwback: Honoring the Old Guard

Not to be outdone, Mike Tyson weighed in with his thoughts, urging White to consider the early legends of the sport. Tyson mentioned the likes of Chuck Liddell, the former light-heavyweight champion known for his fearsome striking and the face of the UFC during its formative years. Liddell’s rivalries and electrifying fights helped propel MMA into the mainstream consciousness.

“Chuck Liddell was a warrior. He fought anyone, anywhere, and helped build the sport into what it is today,” White responded, acknowledging Liddell’s critical role in UFC history.

Tyson also pointed to Royce Gracie, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master who won the first four UFC tournaments, introducing the world to the power of ground fighting. Gracie’s dominance in the early UFC events demonstrated the effectiveness of technique over brute strength and revolutionized martial arts.

“Royce Gracie’s victories in the early UFC events showed the world the power of technique and changed the game forever,” White said, echoing Tyson’s sentiments.

The Missing Names: A Controversial Choice

Despite the comprehensive list, the absence of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor raised eyebrows. Khabib, with his undefeated record and dominant style, is often cited as one of the best to ever step into the Octagon. His retirement at 29-0 left a void in the lightweight division and solidified his place in the hearts of MMA fans worldwide.

Similarly, Conor McGregor’s omission was surprising, given his status as the UFC’s most marketable and charismatic fighter. McGregor’s achievements, including being the first fighter to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously, have had a profound impact on the sport’s global popularity.

DJ Whoo Kid couldn’t resist pointing out the glaring omissions, asking White directly why these two titans of the sport were left off his list. White, while acknowledging their contributions, explained his reasoning: “It’s so hard to just pick five, or even seven. There have been so many great fighters who have all helped elevate the sport in different ways.”

White’s focus on the longevity and overall impact of fighters like Jones, Rousey, Nunes, and Liddell highlighted his belief in the foundational figures who built the UFC into a powerhouse, rather than just those who shone brightly in more recent times.

The Debate Continues

The conversation on “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson” has reignited discussions among fans and pundits alike. Who really are the greatest fighters in UFC history? White’s list, while comprehensive, underscores the difficulty of choosing a definitive roster of legends in a sport as dynamic and evolving as MMA.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the UFC’s history is rich with extraordinary talent and unforgettable moments, and naming the greatest fighters is a task fraught with complexity and, inevitably, controversy.
