In a recent interview, head coach Javier Mendez explained Khabib’s performance. Regarding Khabib’s interest in training, Mendes said that even though Khabib has retired, his commitment to training is still strong. Contrary to the rumors, Khabib has not announced his retirement from training. 

Khabib Not in Makhachev’s Corner

 Although Khabib’s love for his coach is undeniable, Mendes will make sure Khabib doesn’t side with Makhachev at UFC 302. He wants to stand in his corner. However, Khabib’s support for Makhachev comes behind the scenes, providing guidance and understanding to his protege. 

Preparing for Poirier: Makhachev’s Strategy 

As Makhachev prepares to face Dustin Poirier, his training plan is to carefully prepare for Poirier’s famous choke. Makhachev recognized the threat posed by Poirier’s fighting abilities and honed his  choke skills under Khabib’s management. Knowing Poirier’s abilities, Makhachev’s goal is to defeat them in order to secure victory in the Octagon. 

Makhachev’s Confidence Increased 

Under Khabib’s guidance, Makhachev gained confidence. A footage captured Makhachev’s training session, showing him mastering the guillotine choke – a technique designed to wear Poirier down. The training that Makhachev received under Khabib’s guidance indicates his readiness to face the challenges ahead. 

Mendes’ Final Thoughts 

Finally, Mendes praised Khabib’s role as a leader in Makhachev’s camp. Even if Khabib doesn’t stay in the corner, his power will permeate every aspect of Makhachev’s preparation. Mendes is confident in Makhachev’s ability to properly execute his game plan, emphasizing the synergy between trainer and fighter.

As the countdown to UFC 302 gets closer, news about Khabib’s performance as a trainer will increase interest in the  highly anticipated fight. As Makhachev prepares to face Poirier, Khabib’s influence is clearly evident in the fight on fight night.
