Last October, former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman moved up to middle age to fight Khamzat Chimaev in a title match at UFC 294 Unexpected Confusion. Initially, Chimaev faced Paulo Costa who was 6th at the time in the main event in Abu Dhabi. However, a severe staph infection forced Costa to undergo surgery and pull out of the fight, opening the door for Usman.

Usman Defended Chimaev 

Kamaru Usman previously refused to fight Chimaev in the middleweight division, but he accepted the UFC’s offer to fight Chimaev at 185 pounds. Despite the controversial results of the fight, Usman believes that Chimaev was criticized badly by the fans. In an appearance on the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast hosted by Henry Cejudo, Usman spoke candidly about Chimaev’s change of heart. 

“I think people underestimate his abilities just because of me (against Khamzat at UFC 294),” Usman said. “Everybody said, ‘He’s not very good.’ But you know, I’m a fighter and I think there’s a little bit of a problem with him… I still believe there are issues in the Octagon that need to be addressed.” 

Usman showed how the fight was going, Chimaev dominated the first round by taking Usman down and holding him there. Both sides were evenly matched in the second round, but Usman followed suit in the third round with a knockout. Despite the performance of Usman, the judges awarded the victory to Chimaev with the majority of votes. The decision sparked controversy among fans and  comments from UFC executive Dana White, who said the outcome would have been different if the fight had gone five rounds as Usman  wanted. 

Chimaev’s Way forward 

Despite the controversy, Chimaev is expected to make significant progress in his career. He is scheduled to headline the UFC on June 22 in Saudi Arabia  against former champion Robert Whittaker. This fight is very important because the winner will get the title shot. After defeating Usman, Chimaev became the first interim title shot, but declined a  title shot against then-Sean Strickland in January while recovering from an injury.

 Saudi Arabia Betting 

The Chimaev vs. Whittaker fight  is important for both fighters. The winner of this fight will earn a title shot, or the winner can face the winner of the UFC 303 fight between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa in an official title eliminator. The big fight in Saudi Arabia is a big sign for the UFC to expand its presence in the Middle East.

Usman’s willingness to move up a weight class and face one of the most talked about fighters in the UFC shows his fighting spirit and ability to challenge himself.
