The UFC heavyweight division is feeling severely affected as the title picture remains unclear. Two contenders currently hold titles: reigning heavyweight John Jones and interim champion Tom Espinal. Espinal called Jones several times and asked him to combine the titles. However, Jones is determined to face Stipe Miocic in a fight that defines fortunes, a decision that has disappointed many fans and questioned his motives
Tom Aspinall’s Ignored Challenge
Following his main win over Curtis Blades, Tom Aspinall wasted no time in renewing his challenge to Jon Jones. But his call to arms was met with silence. Widely regarded as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in MMA Jones showed little interest in Espinal’s offer. Instead, his focus remains firmly on his upcoming fight against Stipe Miocic, a matchup that many believe is more about defending his legacy than facing the current toughest competition around.
When Jones was asked to respond to Espinal’s wrestling video, his response was dismissive. “I’m focused on the stipe; He’s a real Division I wrestler. Maybe one day Tom will go beat Stipe’s record, but for now, I’m focused on GOAT stuff,” Jones wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Is Jones ducking Aspinall?
Jones’ unemployment prompted much speculation that he would avoid a fight with Espinal. But Jones himself refuted these claims, arguing that official negotiations for the war never took place. “I had already voiced that I wasn’t interested in any randomness anymore. Now, magically, I am going into a fight that was never discussed or talked about at any table of importance. Lol, I stick to my plans; John Jones doesn’t jump for anyone,” Jones said.

Following these comments, Jones posted photos on Instagram of himself teaching Muay Thai to young fighters. “Thank you for having me @saeksonmuaythai I’m excited to be hanging out with you all again @monsterenergy,” he captioned the post. But instead of calming the situation, the announcement seemed to fuel the fire, with fans flooding the comments to accuse Jones of shunning Espinal.
Fan Rage is high
Reactions from the MMA community have been highly critical of Jones’ decision to prioritize fighting Miocic over a fight with Aspinall. Many fans feel that giving up the belt would be an honorable move if Jones is not willing to defend it against the interim champion. This sentiment is fueled by recent decisions by fighters like Jamahl Hill and Jiri Prochajka who earned the respect of the community by voluntarily relinquishing their titles when injured.
Fans haven’t stopped venting their frustrations. “Drop the belt or fight Tom, we don’t give a sh*t about Stipe, and you can’t believe it’s a good matchup—it’s ridiculous,” said one fan. Another fan described the “stop running away from Aspinall” feeling.
The legacy of Stipe Miocic, once feared to be the boogeyman of the heavyweight division, is also being questioned. Miocic was the first player to defeat Francis Nnnou in the UFC, cementing his place in history. But now that Miocic is past his former retirement, fans are arguing that Jones should focus on replacing Aspinall, who represents the current top competition: “Stipe is past his time flourishing, Mr. Bones. Stop going for the easy fight. The man has not fought in years and is over 40. If that fight had happened 5 years ago, it would have been a huge draw. Fight against the current top wizard, Espinal,” wrote one disappointed fan.
