Jiri Prochazka, the light heavyweight contender, is on a determined mission to recapture the title he was forced to relinquish due to injury. With his sights set on a triumphant return, he hopes to make it happen before the curtains close on 2023.
The path to redemption was illuminated when Alex Pereira secured victory over Jan Blachowicz at UFC 291, a clash that UFC President Dana White promptly designated as a title eliminator. It’s now widely anticipated that Prochazka and Pereira will engage in a fierce battle for the vacant light heavyweight championship. Prochazka is eager to deliver a thrilling spectacle for fight enthusiasts and remains hopeful that this much-anticipated showdown will unfold within the current year. His shoulder, once a source of concern, is now at full health, poised for action.
Prochazka shared his perspective, stating, “That’s my next fight, [it] will be [for] the title. So I think that Alex is the [opponent], [and has] the very good chance to show the world a good title fight. And I’d like to see him as my opponent in my next fight,” during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. He continued, “Right now I’m on a technical camp so I don’t know what date they have for the fight. It doesn’t matter. I want to fight this year, so let’s talk about the date, the space for this fight.”
Prochazka maintained a neutral stance when observing the title eliminator at UFC 291, refraining from favoring one fighter over the other. His championship was relinquished after a shoulder injury, which led to the cancellation of a scheduled rematch with the now-retired Glover Teixeira at UFC 282 last December. Ironically, Teixeira was the man Prochazka had defeated for the title. Notably, Teixeira serves as one of Pereira’s principal coaches and mentors, guiding the Brazilian in his successful transition from kickboxing to MMA.
Engaging in a conversation with Teixeira recently, Prochazka’s excitement about facing Pereira surged, as it now offers him a chance to secure two victories over this dynamic duo. Prochazka emphasized, “For me, it doesn’t matter. I want to be the best, that’s why I’m working on the wrestling, the jiu-jitsu, ground and pound, and everything to push it to the next level — [working on] the standup too, to face whoever. For me, it doesn’t matter who is the opponent. Right now, after the messages to Glover, I want to fight with Pereira right now because it seems like the second fight with Glover [won’t] happen, and Pereira is his second version but more in the standup, so let’s do that.” Prochazka’s determination and readiness for this pivotal bout in his career underscore his commitment to achieving greatness once again.
