Owing to a hand ligament injury, Islam Makhachev, the UFC lightweight champion, is experiencing an unanticipated setback in his career. He had a highly anticipated fight against Arman Tsarukyan slated for October, but this injury has derailed his preparations. Makhachev’s inability to attend UFC 308 led to the official cancelation of the bout. In view of this event, Belal Muhammad, a fellow fighter, has provided commentary on the matter, sharing his thoughts regarding the nature of the injury and how it may affect Islam Makhachev’s prospects in the cage.
Javier Mendez Describes a New Plan
Makhachev’s coach Javier Mendez has shed light on the significance of the injury and how it has affected Islam Makhachev’s aspirations. Makhachev was eyeing a move up to the welterweight division, with a possible title fight against Leon Edwards. But these plans have been scuttled by both a hand injury and Muhammad’s victory over Edwards, which gave Muhammad the welterweight title.
Speaking to Helen Yee, Mendez explained the situation: “I think it’s going to be an Arman rematch because I don’t see anything else on the horizon, you know, because I highly doubt they’d want to fight now that Belal has won the welterweight title. So I think that changes the dynamic of going for a belt position.” This statement highlights the complexity of Islam Makhachev’s position, as he has previously stated that he would not fight honor Muhammad because of their close relationship.

Could be a Rematch
Despite the setback, Islam Makhachev is determined to return to the Octagon by the end of 2024. Mendez said that while Makhachev may not be ready to compete this year, a rematch with Tsarukyan could be in the cards for next year before the two fighters face each other again in 2019, with Makhachev winning. However, Tsarukyan has since adjusted and promised a much tougher contest if they meet again.
UFC Interim Title Fight on the Horizon
Without Islam Makhachev, the UFC may be considering short-term title fights to keep the lightweight division active. Most recently Tsarukyan defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 300, winning by split decision in three solid rounds. Oliveira and Tsarukyan have no matchups with Islam Makhachev, making the situation in the lightweight division more uncertain.
Mendez confirmed the severity of Islam Makhachev’s injuries, saying, “Yes, he [Islam Makhachev] suffered a nerve injury and… different doctors go to him, and they will see what they will ask him to do. But yes, no, he can’t train for the fight [in October].” With Makhachev on the sidelines, the UFC could schedule a fight with Tsarukyan and another top contender for the 155-pound title at UFC 308.
This temporary title fight could be a pivotal moment for the Tsarukyan, as it comes with both opportunity and risk. A win could solidify his position in the division, while a loss could scuttle his shot at the title. Meanwhile, Oliveira, who missed the chance to fight Islam Makhachev before UFC 294 due to injury, is also watching the lightweight division change carefully.
