Not much has changed in the MMA world despite the excitement surrounding Islam Makhachev’s upcoming opponent. At UFC 302 in June, reigning lightweight champion Makhachev displayed his prowess by defeating Dustin Poirier. Although there was intense competition throughout the bout, Makhachev’s performance in the final round was sufficient to guarantee his win.

The Recent Rise of Max Holloway

Max Holloway, also referred to as “Blessed,” is having a significant influence in the lightweight class. After defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 in April, Holloway saw a significant upsurge in confidence. Makhachev, who had his sights set on the welterweight class, took notice of the victory. But Makhachev changed his mind, saying he didn’t want to see Belal Muhammad.

Makhachev said that he would be interested in taking on Holloway in a recent Q&A session held in advance of the UFC Abu Dhabi event. “He gave a great performance in the last fight,” he said, praising Holloway’s performance. That’s correct—he defeated Gaethje. Though he acknowledged Holloway’s remarkable performance, Makhachev made it apparent that Holloway is not currently in contention for a title chance.

Special Circumstances of Title Fighting

In the event that he faced Holloway, Makhachev outlined a precise plan of action. He declared that Holloway needed to defeat Ilia Topuria in order to advance. Makhachev clarified, saying, “This is a challenging match for him, even if he wins Topuria. Let’s go if the UFC wants this match and he defeats him. Let’s get started. Emphasizing Holloway’s background and past triumphs in the lightweight class, Makhachev hinted that a rivalry between the two might grow more important should Holloway defeat Topuria.

Taking Makhachev’s prior opinions on the BMF title into account, this stance is intriguing. He’d already called Holloway out for targeting the heavyweight title and written it off and meaningless. Makhachev’s newfound willingness to take on Holloway and his altered demeanor point to a different strategy.

Injury Setbacks and Delayed Returns

Before a potential bout with Holloway is scheduled, Makhachev is facing an injury that could delay his return. While there were rumors that Makhachev would appear at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, these plans are now not uncertain. Makhachev revealed yesterday that he tore part of his tendon in his fight with Poirier. The injury is expected to sideline him for the rest of the year.

Makhachev’s coach Javier Mendez has provided an update on the situation. Mendez suggested that Makhachev might not be ready to fight until late December or possibly January. Despite the setback, Makhachev is optimistic. During the Q&A session, he downplays the severity of his injury, saying, “One little thing, it’s part of this sport. I have a minor injury right now. I’ve cut my arm veins and we’ll see for the next 10 days, these are the things I need to wear and the doctor will decide.”

Community and Fan Reactions

The news of Makhachev’s injuries and the conditions surrounding a possible matchup with Holloway have shocked the mixed martial arts community. Though they are concerned about delays and Makhachev’s recuperation process, fans are excited to attend the event. Fans are anxiously awaiting Makhachev’s comeback while they watch Holloway’s bout with Topuria, since the lightweight category is still quite competitive.

The ambition of Makhachev to face Holloway in the lightweight category adds drama if Holloway wins against Topuria. The course of this potential battle and if Makhachev can recover fully in time for a major match will be closely watched by MMA fans.
