Title: UFC Veteran Burns Determined to Overcome Adversity, Ready to Make a Comeback
In a sport where resilience is often as crucial as skill, UFC featherweight Gilbert Burns embodies the spirit of a fighter determined to overcome setbacks. Burns, who suffered a knee injury during his last UFC bout in July 2022, has since undergone two procedures to address issues with his ACL. Despite the challenges, he’s set to face Julio Arce this Saturday at UFC Atlantic City with a fiery determination to send a message to the division.
Speaking on the MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast, Burns acknowledged the formidable challenge ahead, recognizing Arce as a tough opponent with significant experience in the UFC. However, he exuded confidence, emphasizing his readiness to compete at his peak. He expressed, “I know I have the skills to beat him. I beat anyone when I’m 100 percent, and I’m 100 percent now. All I have to do is go there and do a great job and get this win.”
The road to recovery hasn’t been smooth for Burns. Since his last victory over Evan Dunham, where he secured a submission in just 80 seconds, he has grappled with injuries, including a foot injury sustained during the bout. More serious health issues arose in subsequent fights against Daniel Pineda and Bill Algeo, resulting in prolonged periods on the sidelines.
However, Burns’ resolve remained unshaken. Despite the setbacks, he eagerly accepted the opportunity to face Arce, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his craft. “I wanted to fight,” he asserted, reflecting on the frustration of being sidelined. “I took that time to focus on reconstructing my thigh and knees. My leg is way, way stronger now. I’m working out hard every single day.”
For Burns, the journey back to the octagon represents more than just a return to competition; it’s a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. Managing his gym, The Way, in Florida provided a source of income during his hiatus from fighting, but his heart remained set on making a triumphant comeback.
“I don’t need to fight. I have my own gym today, and I can just sit there and teach. I would be cool,” Burns explained, emphasizing that his motivation stems from a deep-seated desire to succeed. “I don’t do this because I need this, I do it because I want to. I want to win. I’ve worked hard to win. I deserve to win.”
As Burns prepares to step back into the spotlight, his story serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination inherent in the world of mixed martial arts. Despite facing adversity, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of victory, fueled by a passion that transcends the challenges he’s encountered.
