Macy Barber has shared her emotions and detailed explanations regarding her recent withdrawal from the UFC Denver main event. The flyweight champion was scheduled to face Rose Namajunas on July 13 at the Ball Arena in Colorado but had to back out due to health issues. In an interesting Instagram post, Barber revealed the serious challenges she has faced since her last fight. She described the physical and mental toll that her training and previous matches have taken on her body, emphasizing the importance of health and recovery. Barber expressed her disappointment in missing the highly anticipated fight but remains hopeful for a swift return to the octagon.
A health problem emerged
Unexpected health complications marred Barber’s fight camp for UFC Denver. Two months before the scheduled fight, Barber was hospitalized for nine days after the previous fight. Despite medical efforts, his condition remained uncertain and he developed pneumonia in hospital. The extensive use of oral and intravenous antibiotics severely damaged his system.
“I spent 9 days in the hospital less than 2 months ago,” Barber explained in her post. “Then the doctors couldn’t figure out what was going on, and I ended up with pneumonia.” The antibiotics he received weakened his body, affecting his ability to train properly for the fight.
Training difficulties and medical impediments
Once Barber eased back into training, he struggled with fitness and lack of fitness. “I don’t have any of the energy I need to get ready for a 5-round fight,” he admitted. Despite his best efforts, he could not meet the physical demands of the training and had to undergo further medical examination.
Working with the UFC, a team of doctors performed numerous blood, urine, sinus microflora, gut and hormone tests on Barber. Several underlying events were identified, including Epstein-Barr virus infection. The virus caused him body aches, headaches, extreme fatigue, and difficulty recovering between training sessions.
The decision to withdraw
Barber’s position led to a difficult decision. “After being informed about the high risk of spinal fracture, and other life-altering risks, I was devastated,” she said. The severity of her condition made it clear that continuing to push could pose a serious threat to her long-term health.
After discussions with his trainers, doctors and the UFC, Barber made the difficult decision to retire from fighting. “My physical health needs to be taken care of now, so I can race in the future,” he said. Now the focus is on his recovery and ensuring he can return to the Octagon in the best possible way.
