In an unexpected and inspiring turn of events, former UFC star Roxanne Modafferi has transitioned from the world of mixed martial arts to become an English teacher in Japan, citing concerns over potential brain damage as her primary motivation.

A Remarkable Journey from MMA Pioneer to Educator

Roxanne Modafferi’s journey in the world of combat sports is nothing short of remarkable. Her MMA career commenced in the early 2000s when the sport was still in its infancy, long before the era of mainstream attention led by Conor McGregor. With a record of 25 wins and 20 losses, she faced tough competition throughout her tenure, culminating in her appearance at UFC 271 in February 2022, where she experienced a split-decision loss to Casey O’Neill.

The 41-year-old fighter decided it was time to hang up her gloves after that bout, a decision that raised eyebrows but was rooted in genuine concern for her well-being. Modafferi has had her fair share of brutal moments in the octagon, most notably her grueling encounter with Maycee Barber at UFC 246 in January 2020. Despite emerging victorious as an underdog, she suffered a gruesome cut on her skull and tore her left ACL, which undoubtedly contributed to her growing apprehension about the long-term consequences of her fighting career.

The Quest for the Perfect Job

Following her retirement from professional fighting, Modafferi embarked on a year-long quest for the “perfect job,” a journey that reflects her determination and commitment to excellence. She refused to settle for anything less, holding out for an opportunity that resonated with her.

She finally found her calling as an English teacher in Japan, where she imparts her knowledge to a diverse range of students aged 18 to 60. Modafferi’s passion for teaching is evident as she speaks about her students, stating, “I am good at that. My students like me, my boss likes me, I feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives still, which is still important.”

In addition to her English teaching role, she also teaches kids Jiu Jitsu in the evenings at Tribe Martial Arts and Fitness, balancing her newfound career with her ongoing passion for martial arts.

From Octagon to Classroom: A Stealthy Transition

One intriguing aspect of Modafferi’s transition is the anonymity she enjoys in her English teaching role. She shared that her English students are largely unaware of her MMA background, with only a solitary individual recognizing her. It appears that her students are not avid MMA fans, allowing her to teach without the weight of her past accomplishments hanging over her.

In the words of Modafferi, “My English students do not [know who I am]. I don’t think they are MMA fans. One guy recognized me. I said I did Jiu-Jitsu, and he said, ‘Oh, I am a Blue Belt.’ But nobody knows who I am at my English school.”

A Heroic Pivot in Pursuit of Well-being

Roxanne Modafferi’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of happiness beyond the confines of the cage. Her journey serves as an inspiration to all, highlighting the importance of prioritizing one’s health and well-being, even in the face of unconventional career choices.

Modafferi’s transition from the high-stakes world of professional fighting to the classrooms of Japan is a testament to her determination and resilience. It reminds us that, in the pursuit of our dreams, it is crucial to prioritize our health and well-being above all else. Her story resonates with those who dare to chase their passions and find fulfillment in unexpected places.

Roxanne Modafferi’s decision to leave the octagon behind and embark on a career as an English teacher is a bold and commendable move. It reflects her commitment to self-care and personal growth, setting an example for athletes and individuals alike. It is a reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all path to success, and true fulfillment comes from following one’s heart.
