In a much-anticipated showdown, the UFC has officially scheduled the title bout between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington for UFC 296. This thrilling welterweight championship match is expected to headline the event, promising a showdown for the ages.
Leon Edwards, boasting a remarkable record of 20-3 MMA and 12-2 UFC, is all set to defend his welterweight title for the second time. Edwards earned his place at the top with a jaw-dropping come-from-behind knockout of Kamaru Usman in August 2022 at UFC 278. The rubber match between Edwards and Usman at UFC 286 ended in Edwards’ favor with a majority decision.
However, what makes this fight even more intriguing is Edwards’ decision to face Colby Covington, who is ranked fourth and has had limited appearances in the Octagon over the past two years. Initially skeptical of Covington’s worthiness as a contender, Edwards has finally agreed to this long-awaited showdown.
On the other side, Colby Covington, 17-3 MMA and 12-3 UFC, is determined to seize this opportunity and make it third time lucky in his pursuit of a UFC belt. Covington faced Usman twice, suffering losses in both encounters. However, he has displayed impressive form in his recent fights, with victories including a fifth-round injury TKO of Tyron Woodley and a unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 in March 2022.
In addition to the Edwards vs. Covington headliner, UFC 296 will also feature an electrifying co-main event in the form of a flyweight title fight between champion Alexandre Pantoja, with a record of 26-5 MMA and 10-3 UFC, and challenger Brandon Royval, who stands at 15-6 MMA and 5-2 UFC.
The event is scheduled to take place on December 16th at the iconic T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcasted on pay-per-view, following prelims expected to air on ESPN and ESPN+. The announcement of these championship bouts was made by UFC CEO Dana White on social media, sending the MMA world into a frenzy of excitement.
