Tuesday night was an intense evening of fights at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nev. during week eight, week two of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS). The highly anticipated event featured a series of explosive clashes, with Andreas Gustafsson vs. Pat Pitlik headlining.
Special Event Review: Gustafson Prize
In the main event, 33-year-old Canadian Andreas Gustafsson faced 33-year-old Pat Pytlik of Sweden at welterweight. Both fighters entered the Octagon to show something, and it was Gustafsson who won. The fight was intense from the start, with both fighters showing aggressiveness and determination. But it was Gustafson’s accuracy and power that ultimately made the difference. In the second round, Gustafson landed a series of devastating knees that led to a TKO win at 3:20.

Other fights: Kuniev and Romeos Dominate
The extra main event pitted Rizwan Kuniev, a rising star in the heavyweight division against Hugo Cunha. Kuniev wasted no time in asserting his authority. In the first round, he delivered several punches that dominated Cunha. The fight was stopped at 4:59 of the first round and Kuniaw earned the TKO victory. This performance was a clear statement from Kuniv, who is rising quickly and proving to be a formidable force in the heavyweight class
In another exciting battle, Cortavius Romius faced Michael Imperato in the featherweight division. Romeos showed excellent power throughout the fight, defeating Imperato and landing a big punch. The judges were unanimous against Romeos, with all three judges giving him a 30-27 victory. Romeus’ victory cemented his status as a highly skilled fighter and a fighter capable of making waves in the featherweight division.
Torrez Phinney also did an outstanding job in his fight against Cameron Roston. The lightweight fight was a back-and-forth battle, with both fighters having their moments. However, Phinney’s relentless pressure and effective striking earned him a unanimous decision win, with the judges battling it out across the board 29-28 Phinney’s ability to stay composed and execute his game plan under pressure is a testament to his ability to do so.
Cody Haddon ended the night with an imposing victory over Billy Brand in his bantamweight bout. Haydon immediately established his dominance, taking Brand to the floor and getting a rear naked choke. The interception came at 3:09 of the first quarter, giving Haddon the dramatic victory. Haydon’s grappling skills were on full display, and his quick finish highlighted his potential as a formidable contender in the bantamweight division.
What’s next?
With these victories, all six fighters made strong cases for themselves in the UFC. Gustafson’s powerful performance in the main event may have just earned him a deal, while Kuniev, Romeos, Phinney and Haydon have all placed themselves on the radar of UFC matchmakers as the Dana White championship series continues and no doubt fans will look these increasing well talents.
