Initial Reservations and Lack of Familiarity

During a recent interview, Costa admitted to not having watched du Plessis’ fights extensively. He confessed, “I didn’t watch the fight yet. I need to watch some fights, I’m not a hard UFC watcher.” This revelation hinted at his initial reservations and lack of familiarity with the South African champion’s fighting style.

Acknowledging du Plessis’ Accomplishments

Despite his limited exposure to du Plessis’ bouts, Costa acknowledged the significance of the South African fighter’s victory over Robert Whittaker. He remarked, “I just think it’s hard to say something about him. I don’t have any concept yet, I just think people say bad things about him even right now but I think he did what he’s supposed to do, he knocked out Whittaker.” Costa’s acknowledgment of du Plessis’ accomplishment highlighted his respect for the new champion’s abilities, despite the prevailing criticism surrounding him.

Costa’s UFC Future: Return Timeline and Potential Fights

In addition to discussing du Plessis’ reign, Paulo Costa provided insights into his own UFC future, including his return timeline and desired matchups.

Eager to Return to Action

Costa expressed his eagerness to return to the octagon following his loss to Whittaker at UFC 298. He revealed, “I can’t wait to come back. I told UFC that I’ll be ready to fight again in May.” This declaration underscored Costa’s determination to resume his fighting career and make a statement in the middleweight division.

Desire for Title Shot and Rematches

While Costa remained open to various matchups, including a potential fight for the title, he also expressed interest in seeking rematches against former opponents. He stated, “If the guys offer me to fight for the title right now, I would, of course.” Costa’s willingness to vie for the championship demonstrated his unwavering confidence in his abilities and his desire to reclaim his status as a top contender in the middleweight division. Additionally, Costa expressed his desire for rematches against adversaries such as Israel Adesanya, Marvin Vettori, and Sean Strickland, emphasizing his commitment to redemption and his eagerness to avenge previous losses.

Costa vs. Usman: A Potential Middleweight Showdown?

In a surprising turn of events, Paulo Costa expressed interest in facing former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the middleweight division. Costa’s bold declaration came after Usman’s successful debut in the 185-pound weight class, where he defeated Gilbert Burns. Costa asserted, “Usman 185 lbs looks interesting. Gourmet Chen Chen couldn’t finish him even on short notice. I might,” hinting at a potential showdown between the two formidable fighters.

Potential Middleweight Clash

Costa’s proposition of a matchup against Usman added an intriguing dimension to the middleweight division. With both fighters possessing exceptional skills and a penchant for finishing their opponents, a potential clash between Costa and Usman promised to be an exhilarating spectacle for MMA fans worldwide. Costa’s confidence in his ability to defeat Usman further fueled speculation about the possibility of this highly anticipated showdown.
