In an unexpected twist that has sent shockwaves through the world of mixed martial arts, Bellator’s heavyweight champion, Ryan “Darth” Bader, has found himself entangled in a web of controversy, with Viacom at the center of it all. The cancellation of a highly-anticipated fight has not only left fans disappointed but has also raised questions about the future of the Bellator organization.

Former UFC light heavyweight standout, Ryan Bader, has been enjoying tremendous success since making the switch to Bellator in 2016. Over the past seven years, Bader has amassed a stellar record of 9-2 (1 NC) and claimed both the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles along the way.

This week, Bader was slated to defend his heavyweight championship against Linton Vassell at Bellator 300. However, just days before the event, Vassell had to withdraw due to illness, leaving the fight card in disarray. It was at this critical juncture that Corey Anderson, another former UFC fighter and recent Bellator light heavyweight Grand Prix finalist, stepped up to the plate, offering to fill the void.

Anderson’s claim to a title shot against Bader is not unfounded. In 2021, he handed Bader a rare defeat in Bellator, securing a TKO victory in the semifinals of the Light Heavyweight Grand Prix. This loss prompted Bader to permanently move up to the heavyweight division, making a potential rematch between the two fighters a tantalizing prospect for fans.

However, just when fans were gearing up for an exciting showdown, Bader dropped a bombshell via his Instagram account. He revealed that the fight with Vassell was officially off due to Vassell’s illness and reluctance to compete. Bader expressed his frustration, citing the significance of a heavyweight title fight and the disappointment it brought to fans.

The situation took an intriguing turn when Ryan Bader responded to Corey Anderson’s offer in the comments section of his Instagram video. Bader’s response contained a cryptic message, implying that Viacom, Bellator’s parent company, might be obstructing the booking of a new fight. He stated, “And it looks like Viacom doesn’t want to pay. They are out Oct, and this falling through saves them money.”

Bader’s insinuation about Viacom’s intentions has ignited speculation and raised eyebrows. Rumors have been circulating for months that Bellator could be on the brink of being sold to the Professional Fighters League (PFL). Recent reports suggest that the PFL plans to keep the Bellator brand alive for a couple more years following the sale before eventually shutting down the promotion, a move reminiscent of the UFC’s acquisition of Strikeforce in 2011.

As the MMA community awaits further developments, the future of Bellator and the fate of the proposed Ryan Bader vs. Corey Anderson rematch remain uncertain. With Viacom’s role in the spotlight, the stage is set for a dramatic showdown not only inside the cage but also in the boardrooms of corporate giants.

The sudden cancellation of the Bader vs. Vassell fight has undoubtedly left fight fans disappointed, especially given the intriguing matchup it promised. Corey Anderson’s offer to step in and face Bader added an exciting twist to the story, as he already holds a victory over the reigning champion. However, the apparent roadblock created by Viacom’s financial considerations adds an element of uncertainty and intrigue to the situation.

Ryan Bader’s frustration with the situation is palpable, and his comment about Viacom’s reluctance to pay raises questions about the behind-the-scenes dealings of Bellator’s parent company. While corporate decisions are a part of any sports promotion, they can sometimes clash with the interests of fighters and fans alike.

The ongoing rumors of Bellator’s potential sale to the PFL have added another layer of complexity to this unfolding narrative. If the PFL does indeed take over Bellator, it could signify a significant shift in the MMA landscape. The PFL’s plan to keep Bellator operational for a few more years before closing its doors bears watching, as it echoes past acquisitions in the sport.

As this drama unfolds, fight enthusiasts and industry insiders will be keeping a close eye on how the situation evolves and whether Corey Anderson will get his long-awaited rematch with Ryan Bader. One thing is for certain: the world of MMA remains as unpredictable and captivating outside the cage as it does inside it.
