Mariscal’s Redemption: Dominance Amidst Weight Controversy at UFC on ESPN 61
In an electrifying showdown at UFC on ESPN 61, Daniel Mariscal’s star continued to rise as he secured a commanding victory over seasoned fighter Damon Jackson in his first UFC co-main event. Despite the triumph, Mariscal’s night was tainted by a significant misstep: he missed weight by 3.5 pounds, casting a shadow over his otherwise stellar performance.
Mariscal (17-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) entered the octagon at the UFC Apex with a heavy heart, having failed to make the featherweight limit. The miscalculation, which he attributed to the sweltering Las Vegas heat, left him embarrassed and contemplating whether he should even proceed with the fight.
“We kind of calculated the weight cut wrong,” Mariscal admitted during the post-fight interview. “Especially with the Vegas heat, it kind of shot my body. Honestly, I was so embarrassed that I was going to pull out of the fight.”
The gravity of the situation was not lost on Mariscal, who expressed deep respect for fighters who adhere strictly to the weight-cutting process. “I have so much respect for the people that lose the weight, do the time, and do everything else,” he said, visibly disappointed in himself. “That’s why I felt bummed and didn’t want to embarrass myself.”
Despite his initial reluctance to step into the arena, Mariscal’s corner played a crucial role in keeping him focused. “My corner kept me in line,” he revealed. “They were like, ‘Man, we have to do what we can. If they don’t want to fight, that’s fine, but we have to try to do what we can,’ and we did.”
Jackson, a seasoned veteran with a record of 23-7-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC, agreed to proceed with the fight, albeit with Mariscal forfeiting a percentage of his purse as a penalty for missing weight. The stage was set for what turned out to be a masterclass in dominance, with Mariscal controlling the pace from start to finish.
Mariscal’s victory was his fourth consecutive win in the UFC, extending his overall winning streak to seven fights. His performance in the octagon, despite the weight controversy, solidified his status as a rising star in the featherweight division. “I’m 4-0 in the UFC, and I just want to keep that up,” Mariscal declared confidently.
While Mariscal’s next opponent remains uncertain, he made it clear that he’s ready to take on anyone. “There’s no specific opponent,” he said. “I just want to fight everyone. I’m not scared of anyone in the featherweight division, the lightweight division. I’m just ready to come out here and own whoever is in my way.”
