In a Grueling Battle, Brandon Royval Recounts Harrowing Moment Knee Gave Out During Brandon Moreno Fight
Flyweight standout Brandon Royval’s recent victory at UFC Fight Night wasn’t without its challenges. Despite emerging triumphant in his showdown against Brandon Moreno, Royval endured a terrifying moment when his knee gave out early in the bout.
Royval stepped up on short notice to replace Amir Albazi for the headlining match against Moreno, seeking redemption after a previous bout ended abruptly due to a dislocated shoulder. Despite the sold-out crowd rallying behind Moreno, Royval clinched a hard-earned decision victory after a grueling five rounds.
However, the victory was marred by Royval’s leg injury, which occurred mere moments into the fight, jeopardizing his ability to execute his kicking-based strategy. Reflecting on the incident during an interview on ESPN’s UFC Post Show, Royval described the unsettling sensation of his knee “popping” and his initial fear of being unable to follow through with his game plan.

“I don’t know what happened. I missed the kick right away and my knee like, it popped,” Royval revealed. “I couldn’t put weight on it. Right off the bat, I’m like, ‘I don’t know what it is about this kid, but like, I break.'”
Despite the setback, Royval demonstrated remarkable resilience, pushing through the pain to execute his strategy and secure a split decision victory. His determination and fortitude in the face of adversity underscored his commitment to the sport and his drive to succeed at the highest level.
Looking ahead, Royval sets his sights on a potential rematch with champion Alexandre Pantoja, aiming to secure a title shot and further cement his place among the elite in the flyweight division.
