The octagon isn’t the only ring where punches are thrown. In a surprising turn of events, UFC CEO Dana White has publicly expressed his ambivalence towards the future of Bellator MMA, one of the UFC’s biggest competitors in the world of mixed martial arts.
Amidst swirling rumors of Bellator MMA facing a possible shutdown, Dana White, known for his unwavering stance on competition, has taken an unexpected stance. While White has previously been unbending about not wanting to acquire Bellator, he now reveals that he doesn’t necessarily want to see it disappear from the MMA landscape either.
In recent months, the MMA community has been buzzing with speculations about Bellator’s fate, including talks of a potential sale, merger with the PFL (Professional Fighters League), or even the grim possibility of a complete shutdown. Bellator’s president, Scott Coker, has confirmed that critical business discussions are indeed underway, but as of now, the future of the promotion remains shrouded in mystery.
During a press conference following DWCS 65, White remarked, “If Bellator continues to exist, it is not a bad thing. It is a good thing.” He went on to add, “If you look at all the sh*t that we take about a lot of things, they are owned by fcking Viacom. Do you know how much money these guys have? Why would they be going out of business unless they are just tired of doing it, because you are hearing rumors about Showtime too, not just Bellator.”
Bellator, entered a new era when Scott Coker, founded in 2008 by Bjorn Rebney, the founder of Strikeforce which was later acquired by the UFC, took charge in 2014. Unlike Strikeforce, however, the UFC seems uninterested in assuming control of a Coker-led promotion, even though Bellator’s fighter roster is often regarded as the second-best in the MMA world.
Over the years, Bellator has successfully attracted several former UFC fighters, giving them a significant platform to continue their careers while providing fans with familiar faces. Alongside these seasoned veterans, Bellator has nurtured a crop of talented, high-level fighters, including Patricio Freire, A.J. McKee, Vadim Nemkov, Yaroslav Amosov, and Usman Nurmagomedov, among others.
Despite Bellator’s impressive roster and the belief that competition benefits the sport, Dana White remains unconvinced that purchasing the company is a wise business move. He bluntly stated, “Why on God’s green f*cking Earth would anybody buy Bellator?” He continued, “… Why anyone would buy Bellator is beside me. But hey, what do I know? I will sit back and see how this plays out.”
As the MMA world eagerly awaits the outcome of these deliberations, Bellator is gearing up for a significant event, Bellator 300, set to take place at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego. With Bellator 301 scheduled for November 17, the immediate future of the promotion remains uncertain, leaving fans and fighters alike in suspense.
In the world of mixed martial arts, where fighters grapple for glory and promotions vie for supremacy, Dana White’s unexpected stance on Bellator’s future adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding narrative. As the MMA community eagerly awaits the outcome of these critical discussions, one thing remains clear: the octagon may be where battles are waged, but the arena of competition stretches far beyond, encompassing the boardrooms and negotiations that shape the sport’s landscape. With the fate of Bellator still uncertain, the coming days promise to be nothing short of thrilling for MMA enthusiasts worldwide, reminding us that in this ever-evolving world of combat sports, the only thing more unpredictable than the fights themselves is the business that surrounds them. Stay tuned for more twists and turns in this captivating MMA saga.
