The current UFC light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira, isn’t holding back in a heated debate ahead of UFC 307. With intensity and accuracy, Pereira has criticised Magomed Ankalaev, the No. 2 contender, alleging that his mediocre fighting technique prevents him from contending for the title. When discussing the reasons why Ankalaev was not given the opportunity to compete for the title, Pereira, who will be defending his belt against Khalil Rountree, did not hold back.

The Streak of Ankalaev Is Not Enough

Pereira maintains that Ankalaev’s stellar record—ten victories and one draw in his last eleven fights—is insufficient. With evident annoyance, Pereira remarked, “It’s not my fault Ankalaev has such a boring style that nobody wants to watch.” Ankalaev’s fighting technique has come under fire; both detractors and supporters have called it boring. Even though Ankalaev hasn’t lost a fight since losing to Paul Craig by submission in 2018, he has had trouble getting a title match.

“He’s been winning, but honestly, who is eager to watch him battle? No one,” claimed Pereira. The champion feels that his intense, action-packed shows are what the audience is waiting for. His audacious remarks have caused a stir in the mixed martial arts community, igniting discussion on whether winning or pleasing the audience is the real goal of the sport.

The UFC and Dana White Are Not Impressed

Not only Pereira appears to be ignoring Ankalaev. Despite the fact that Ankalaev has more than justifiedly earned a championship chance based on the data, UFC President Dana White and the matchmakers have also shown hesitation to schedule the fighter. Pereira contends that Ankalaev’s manager’s recent public display of annoyance only made matters worse.

“Dana White and the UFC being called out like that? Big error, Pereira added, speaking through a translator. You don’t go around making fun of the UFC. They are now enraged. They manage this sport; they’re not clowns. Therefore, Ankalaev’s team needs to manage this with more intelligence.

The UFC brass is obviously not giving up. Pereira believes that Ankalaev’s group ought to reevaluate their strategy. “A title shot is what you want? Start a conversation by saying, “Earn it not just by fighting, but by giving the fans what they want,” Pereira remarked.

Rountree vs. Pereira: An Unexpected Duel

At UFC 308, Ankalaev is scheduled to face Aleksandar Rakic, while Pereira will defend his title against the unconventional but potent Khalil Rountree. Fans are also questioning Rountree’s ability to outpace opponents ranked higher despite his eighth-place ranking. Pereira, however, doesn’t waste time defending the choice, emphasising that in this sport, standings don’t matter.

“The way of Rountree? explosive and erratic. People are interested in what he’ll do next, so he’s earned this opportunity,” Pereira said. “Although he may not be as highly ranked, he still excite me. After all, this is a business.”

This very logic prevents Ankalaev from coming up in the discussion. Action is what fans desire, and even though Rountree is the underdog, he adds excitement and unpredictability to the cage.

Ankalaev’s Forgotten Chance

Ankalaev has to keep his attention on his impending battle with Rakic for the time being. It’s evident that even if he prevails, there’s no assurance he’ll face Pereira again. The winner was very clear in saying that he would only fight Ankalaev if Ankalaev offered more than just victory.

“I have no trouble fighting him. Fans shouldn’t expect to pay for a ticket to watch him pin me down for five rounds, though. Pereira stated, “They want a fight, and I’m here to give it to them,” applying pressure to Ankalaev to improve.

What Does the Light Heavyweight Division Have in Store?

Legends like Jan Blachowicz, Daniel Cormier, and Jon Jones have led the way in the UFC’s light heavyweight category, which has always been among the most competitive. Pereira is now in charge, but his reign is expected to be filled with drama and fireworks. Conversely, Ankalaev continues to be a mystery; he is powerful yet underestimated.

All eyes are on Ankalaev to see how he handles Rakic as Pereira prepares to defend his title. Will he show that his abilities are sufficient to quell his detractors? Or will he keep getting passed over in favour of more interesting fighters? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: Pereira isn’t giving up, and it appears like the UFC management is on his side.
