In a fiery social media post commemorating the fifth anniversary of his epic UFC 229 showdown with arch-rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor unleashed a scathing verbal attack on the Russian and his teammates, likening them to “dead rats in the swamp.” The bitter history between these two former champions continues to smolder.

It was on this day five years ago that the MMA world witnessed one of the most anticipated lightweight title fights in history. Conor McGregor, the charismatic two-division champion from Dublin, faced off against the formidable Khabib Nurmagomedov, a dominant force hailing from the American Kickboxing Academy.

The bout was the culmination of McGregor’s return to professional mixed martial arts after a brief hiatus to pursue boxing, which saw him face off against the legendary Floyd Mayweather in August of the previous year. In the lead-up to the championship showdown, McGregor engaged in a war of words with Nurmagomedov, trading fierce insults and personal jabs that only added fuel to the fire.

As the fight unfolded, it was clear that this clash was not just about titles and records; it was personal. In the fourth round, Nurmagomedov secured a neck crank submission, forcing McGregor to tap out. But the drama did not end there.

Following the submission, Nurmagomedov leaped over the Octagon and launched an airborne attack on McGregor’s corner team, notably engaging in a heated confrontation with Dillon Danis. Chaos erupted both inside and outside the cage, as security officials struggled to contain the fighters and maintain order.

Inside the cage, McGregor, now back on his feet, found himself under attack from members of Nurmagomedov’s team, including Zubaira Tukhugov, resulting in a wild brawl that left fans in shock.

Fast forward to the present, and Conor McGregor, sidelined due to a leg injury sustained during his fight against common foe Dustin Poirier in 2021, is gearing up for his return to the Octagon. McGregor is set to face off against Michael Chandler in a highly anticipated welterweight division clash. He recently re-entered the USADA testing pool, signaling his imminent return to the sport.

In a characteristic display of his fiery persona, McGregor took to social media to revisit the infamous UFC 229 showdown and take aim at Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team once again. The Irish fighter’s comments have reignited the smoldering rivalry between the two fighters, setting the stage for potential fireworks in the future.
